Please reinstate our firearm ranges - our 2nd Amendment is essential!
Dear Attorney General Grewal,
As a supporter of the Second Amendment and resident of New Jersey, I appreciate very much the recent EO revision to reopen firearms retailers, the state NICS system, and the electronic fingerprinting system. However, I am very concerned that shooting ranges remain shut down. The federal government, as you know, included ranges in its March 22 update to critical infrastructure. Other states have reopened them after initial closure, to align with the federal guidance. I request that you work with Governor Murphy to expedite making shooting ranges an exception to EO #107, declaring them essential, and enable them to reopen immediately.
This is the right action to take for several reasons:
Federal guidance includes ranges specifically: “Workers supporting the operation of firearm or ammunition product manufacturers, retailers, importers, distributors, and shooting ranges”.
Ranges are able to retain proper “social distancing”; firearms retailers already have put in place such precautions that easily can extend to ranges, which often are under the same roof.
The current situation is an economic disaster for these small businesses, which are at risk of closing permanently. The loss of critical jobs and training facilities could be devastating, and also represents a loss of tax income for the state.
A state of emergency does not reduce the public’s need for firearms training; in fact, the need may be even greater due to the large increase in new firearms owners.
Firearms retailers and ranges are both necessary components of our right to keep and bear arms.
Several organizations in New Jersey also back this request to expedite reopening our ranges: New Jersey 2A Sanctuary, Gun For Hire LLC, and Coalition of New Jersey Firearm Owners, representing many tens of thousands of state residents.
It is time to add shooting ranges as essential, and able to reopen immediately, as was done for firearms sales and NICS.
